Newton Lower Falls

Beautification

HELP BEAUTIFY OUR NEIGHBORHOOD!

We are lucky to live in Newton, aka the “Garden City.” Even better, here is Lower Falls we are bordered by the Charles River, the mostly-green expanses of the Leo J. Martin golf course, tree-lined Hamilton Park, and many wonderful gardens, not just in front yards, but around the park and main streets.

Have you ever wondered how our lovely surroundings are and maintained? The LFIA Beautification Committee! Volunteers—your neighbors—come together to mulch, plant, weed, and care for all of the public garden spaces. And we need your help.

Get involved! Volunteers do not need any garden experience (although expertise is always appreciated). All ages are welcome. Not only will you be providing much-needed aid, you’ll get to hang out with friends old and new. Kids especially love digging in the dirt, of course, and they will also benefit from knowing they are contributing too their neighborhood.

Help with Seasonal Projects:

Come join the weekly morning gardening crew to weed garden beds, prune trees, and so on. Send an email to: lfia-gardens@googlegroups.com to get weekly updates or just show up. We can usually be found at the Hamilton Park or at one of the gardens.

Watch for our neighborhood email group for special planting, mulching, and clean-up days. (Not on the LFIA email listserv? Sign up here.)

Spring Clean-Up: In April, the city provides us with mulch. We clean up winter debris and spread the mulch.

Fall Mulching: The trees need mulch in the Fall. We do a general cleanup and then place city-provided mulch around the trees at Hamilton field.

Fall Planting: All the flowers you see in April and May were planted the prior Fall. We will have a planting day in the Fall where we propagate plants and bulbs and add additional ones to enhance spring color.

Propose a Project! Several of the gardens in Lower Falls are the result of
community projects undertaken by Eagle Scouts, as memorials to loved
ones, and other special circumstances. Have an idea or see a need?
Let us know!
Plant Exchanges: Do you have a surplus of plants that you would like
to divide or donate? Non-toxic ground covers, such asHostas, lilies, ferns,
lavender, peonies, or others, are especially useful. Ideally, plants should be
drought-tolerant (we have limited watering capacity) and rabbit-proof.
Provide Funding: Your annual LFIA dues go a long way to funding the
Beautification Committee! Of course, we always appreciate additional
funds. Since the LFIA is a non- profit, 501(C3) organization, your
charitable contribution is tax-deductible. Donate here.

Reconnect with your body and mind as you escape the noise of everyday life.
